The Winnats Pass Tree stands alone on the steep northern side of Winnats Pass, Castleton in the Peak District. This sycamore tree, silhouetted against a morning temperature inversion, creates a striking contrast in this black and white photograph. The mist in the valley below softens the rugged landscape, adding depth and atmosphere to the scene.
A unique location in the Peak District
Winnats Pass is one of the Peak District’s most famous landmarks. Its steep limestone cliffs and winding road attract hikers, cyclists and photographers. The pass formed from a collapsed cave system and has a rich history, including legends of hidden treasure and highwaymen. Its geography makes it a hotspot for temperature inversions, where cold air gets trapped in the valley, creating a misty, dreamlike effect at sunrise.
Capturing the perfect shot
Photographer Paul Grogan visited Winnats Pass in September 2024 to capture his first sunrise from this location. He used a 90mm prime lens, which foreshortened the perspective, making the tree appear closer than it actually is. The strong morning light cast long shadows, emphasising the contrast between the tree and the misty valley.
A timeless black and white print
This high-quality black and white print highlights the raw beauty of the Peak District. The absence of color focuses on texture, light and contrast, creating a timeless feel. It’s an ideal piece for anyone who loves nature, photography, or the dramatic landscapes of the Peak District.
Paul’s prints use media from the prestigious digital giclee paper manufacturer, Innova Art. Their acid-free, museum-quality paper boasts a natural white finish and a soft textured surface, reminiscent of traditional etching papers. Moreover, this paper is an ArtSure™ Approved Material, guaranteeing its archival quality. His canvas prints, too, are produced in-house on InnovaArt’s 100% cotton woven canvas surface with a water-resistant coating, ideal for Fine Art and Photographic Open Edition Prints.
