This striking panoramic photograph captures Winnats Pass shadows and inversions, a stunning natural phenomenon in the heart of the Peak District. Taken at sunrise, the image highlights the deep shadows cast by the rugged limestone peaks and the misty valley below, created by a morning temperature inversion. These conditions occur when cold air becomes trapped in the valley, forming a low-lying mist that contrasts beautifully with the sunlit hills above.
Winnats Pass, a dramatic limestone gorge near Castleton, is one of the most iconic locations in the Peak District. Its steep, winding road and towering cliffs make it a favourite for photographers, hikers and cyclists alike. The pass was once part of an ancient trade route and is steeped in history, with legends of highwaymen and lost treasure adding to its intrigue. The unique topography of the area makes it particularly prone to temperature inversions, creating breathtaking scenes – like the one captured in this image.
In the distance, the photograph also reveals Britain’s largest cement plant, a controversial landmark in the Hope Valley. Established in 1929 – long before the Peak District became a national park in 1951 – the plant remains a subject of debate. Some visitors see it as an industrial eyesore, while others recognise its economic importance and ongoing environmental efforts. For landscape photographer Paul Grogan, the contrast between industry and nature offers a unique perspective that adds depth and complexity to his work.
Paul captured this image in September 2024 during his first attempt at photographing Winnats Pass shadows and inversions at sunrise. Using a 90mm prime lens, he framed the early morning sunlight casting long, dramatic shadows across the valley floor.
Paul’s prints use media from the prestigious digital giclee paper manufacturer, Innova Art. Their acid-free, museum-quality paper boasts a natural white finish and a soft textured surface, reminiscent of traditional etching papers. Moreover, this paper is an ArtSure™ Approved Material, guaranteeing its archival quality. His canvas prints, too, are produced in-house on InnovaArt’s 100% cotton woven canvas surface with a water-resistant coating, ideal for Fine Art and Photographic Open Edition Prints.
