Own this stunning Golden Sunrise and Inversion at Winnats Pass

Winnats Pass, often just called “Winnats,” is a striking limestone gorge tucked away in the heart of the Peak District. The name is believed to come from a twisted version of “wind gates,” a nod to the swirling winds that frequently sweep through the pass.

Located to the west of the charming village of Castleton, this dramatic gorge is part of the National Trust’s High Peak Estate, where towering limestone ridges make it a must-see for nature lovers.

This stunning sunrise was captured on a trip to the Peak District in September 2024.

Arriving in the pitch black, I parked nearby and with my headtourch on I carefully walked to where my research suggested would be a good location.

The ground was sodden and slippery though so I put safety first and kept away from the small outcrop I had planned to go to.

I had hoped for an inversion and all the weather forecasts suggested one would occur. In the end it was what the locals called a partial inversion, which in some respects helped add detail to the image.
